What is the Internet of Things?

What does IOT stand for? What is the Internet of Things? It's all over the news, there are hundreds of articles released every day about how IOT  internet of things are changing our lives, probably your neighbor installed a new IOT device this morning! Yet, for many, it is a mystery, the unknown. The truth is that millions of people are using them everyday already. There are news networks and huge websites that specialize in IOT news. So let's look at the definition of the term first. Internet of things definition can be found on Wikipedia, and here is the brief explanation: inter-networking of smart devices and other items embedded with sensors, electronics components and network connectivity that enables these devices to connect and exchange data.

So the next time someone asks you: What is IOT? Just say, that it is your smart light bulb, smart thermostats, smart lock or smart security camera.

What are some Internet of Things examples?

Have you of heard of Smart Home Devices, Smart Thermostats, Smart Locks or Smart lights? These are all examples of IOT or Internet Of Things devices. More and more companies enter this market and create some of the most mind blowing devices out there. What are some of the famous Internet of Things companies out there? Amazon, Google, Honeywell, Philips, Samsung - all manufacturing cutting edge smart devices.

We are going to cover examples and uses of the smart devices later on this page. Please also check out menu on the right side. We have organized devices by categories, like Smart Locks, Smart Thermostats, etc.

IOT devices examples

IOT Devices - How are they changing our lives?

Let me give you an example of a smart home device. Have you ever forgotten your home key and there is no one  who can unlock the door for you? Well, with a smart lock from August, all you need to have is the smart lock and an app on your smartphone. The smart lock can be unlocked the moment you get close to the door. Pretty amazing stuff and extremely convenient.  Or here is another example, you left home and forgot to turn off the lights. Yes, you can come back home, or if you have a smart light bulbs (like this one)  or a smart switch you can turn them off remotely. There are literally hundreds of examples already where IOT devices are making every day tasks more convenient. IOT products aren't expansive and many times pay for themselves (because you could save on electricity bill) in a matter of weeks.

IOT Home Automation - Simplifying Lives

Think of the many ways technology was able to simplify our lives. We travel by boat only when we want to enjoy a vacation but most of the time we take jumbo jet flights that are able to take us from one part of the world to another in a matter of hours. We have super computers that are able to conduct billions of calculations per second, we don't need to do those simple tasks that would take hundreds of hours of our time. IOT world is going to be all around our homes and work places.

We are entering an era where IOT industry is going to be the fastest growing industry creating and re-engeniring some of the most exciting IOT applications.

Real estate agents are starting to use  the term Smart Home as a selling point. Why? Because it is exciting, convenient. Smart home simplifies our lives. I am totally hooked to the IOT world. I leave home and my IOT camera turns on by itself and monitors my front yard. I will know whether someone comes home with built in smart notifications, whether my UPS package arrived or if there is a potential security threat near my house. I also have an IOT security camera inside my home. What does it do? I have 2 pets, and quite often I really would like to know who tore apart my favorite magazine. My Smart Thermostat is connected to an IOT hub - Amazon Echo, it knows when I get home, what temperature should be set when I go to bed, and what it should be set on the weekend.

Literally, there are hundreds of IOT applications and IOT ideas. I suggest that you start getting a couple of devices knowing your needs, and slowly expending from there.

Future of IOT - What to expect?

So where are we going to be in the near future? What is the next chapter in our everyday living?  IOT market is one of the fastest growing markets that will be valued close to $267B by 2020. IOT startups are forming all over the world creating new internet of things products and further expending internet of things applications. IOT companies are solving problems - they are simplifying our lives, they are making us safer (smart smoke detector anyone?) In the near future, most of your appliances manufactured by giants like GE, Samsung, Whirlpool will all have IOT sensors in them. We haven't even touched the topic of healthcare IOT. How would that help us save lives? Just imagine the potential of better health monitoring and diet.

But that's enough of general talk. We are here to look at IOT products and review them.

A smart security camera system records latest events, sends notifications to your smartphone and even Apple watch (for examples a smart security camera system like a Nest Cam Security Camera), ability to be positioned away from the charging base (like the Logitech Circle Wireless HD Camera), and many more functions.
